Cinco recomendaciones para enfrentar la temporada de lluvias

  • Learn how to mitigate risks and strengthen the safety of your home or business in the face of heavy rainfall.

The intense rains in the north of the country have caused considerable damage, including river overflows, landslides, and significant harm to homes, roads, and crops. Regions such as Tumbes, Piura, Áncash, La Libertad, and Lambayeque have been declared in a state of emergency due to the increase in rainfall. In light of this situation, it is essential that the population takes preventive measures to mitigate risks and protect their homes, businesses, as well as their own safety and that of their families.

"Anticipating the rains is the best way to protect what matters most. Choosing quality materials and performing proper maintenance on homes and roads not only prevents damage but also ensures greater safety and peace of mind," said Karla Vallejos, Head of Engineering and Precast Development at Cementos Pacasmayo. In this regard, the executive shares some recommendations to face a rainy season safely:

  • Inspect for fissures or cracks: It is important to inspect roofs, walls, and structures to detect any fissure or crack that could become critical due to the rain. It is recommended to reinforce structures with materials resistant to moisture, such as cement or concrete. Remember that fissures in walls may be superficial and only affect the paint, while cracks in beams, columns, or roofs tend to be deeper and require a thorough inspection by a professional.
  • Pay attention to weather alerts: Following official information from the National Service of Meteorology and Hydrology (Senamhi) and local authorities will allow informed decision-making and anticipation of possible emergencies.
  • Check windows and doors: Open and close windows or doors gently. Everything should fit properly within its frame; if any of them stick or are misaligned, cracks may have caused a shift in the window or door frames, and it’s time to call a specialist for an inspection. This will help prevent rain and moisture from finding ways into your home.
  • Prepare an emergency kit: Keep a backpack with potable water, non-perishable food, a flashlight, batteries, a first aid kit, and important documents in a sealed waterproof bag. This will help you be prepared for any emergency situation.
  • Avoid building in high-risk areas: Ravines, hillsides, and areas near rivers present high risk of landslides or overflows. If living in vulnerable areas, it is recommended to follow the instructions of the authorities and have an evacuation plan in case of emergency.

Facing the challenges of the rainy season requires joint efforts between citizens, authorities, and the private sector. The implementation of preventive strategies, the use of appropriate materials, and constant preparedness are essential to minimize risks and protect lives and property.
