Sernanp y Cementos Pacasmayo renuevan alianza para la conservación y desarrollo sostenible de la Reserva Nacional Illescas

  • An addendum to the cooperation agreement was signed to promote sustainable practices that support the preservation of biodiversity and natural resources in this protected area.

Strengthening the alliance between the State and the private sector for the benefit of Peru’s biodiversity, the National Service of Natural Areas Protected by the State (SERNANP), under the Ministry of the Environment, and Cementos Pacasmayo are reinforcing their joint efforts through the renewal of a cooperation agreement that will contribute to the conservation and sustainable development of the Illescas National Reserve.

To this end, Deyvis Huamán, Director of Management of Protected Natural Areas at SERNANP, and Javier Castillo, Head of Community Relations at Cementos Pacasmayo, signed the addendum to the specific interinstitutional cooperation agreement. The activity also included the participation of Aldo Aguirre, Head of the Illescas National Reserve.

In this regard, Deyvis Huamán highlighted the importance of strengthening coordinated work with various stakeholders committed to the conservation and sustainable development of this protected area and its important marine ecosystem. He also expressed appreciation for Cementos Pacasmayo’s commitment to joining efforts toward this objective.

For his part, Javier Castillo emphasized the fruitful relationship between the company and SERNANP. He added: “The signing of this addendum reaffirms our commitment to environmental protection, species conservation, and the enhancement of natural spaces such as the Illescas National Reserve and the Virrilá Estuary, located in Sechura.” The executive noted that this agreement also reinforces compliance with SDG 15, which promotes the conservation of life on land ecosystems, and SDG 17, which highlights the importance of partnerships to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals. He also thanked the support of local communities in Cementos Pacasmayo’s areas of influence, who chose the company to chair the Management Committees and the Municipal Environmental Commission. He emphasized that the active participation of communities is key to the success of environmental conservation projects.

Alliance for conservation and development

Through this agreement, strategic conservation and development actions will be promoted, including encouraging sustainable practices that support the preservation of biodiversity and natural resources within the protected area. To achieve this, monitoring and surveillance mechanisms will be implemented to safeguard natural resources and ecosystems.

Likewise, the active participation of local communities will be encouraged in initiatives aimed at climate change adaptation and mitigation, as well as the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals. As part of this effort, environmental education and awareness programs will be implemented for communities living within the reserve’s area, along with the promotion of community projects and activities focused on protecting natural resources and ensuring environmental sustainability.

Similarly, this agreement will promote sustainable productive practices that not only contribute to conserving the biodiversity of the protected area but also strengthen climate resilience among local populations and foster development and improved quality of life for surrounding communities.
