La sostenibilidad como norte: una mirada necesaria en la industria de la construcción

We live in an era in which the effects of climate change are becoming increasingly evident. It is therefore not surprising that 2024 has been classified as the warmest year on record. As a result, industries — especially construction, which contributes approximately 35% of greenhouse gas emissions — play a fundamental role in mitigating this phenomenon. In Peru, where, according to a study by the School of Public Management at Universidad del Pacífico, the infrastructure gap for the 2016–2025 period amounts to US$159.549 billion, the challenge is not only to build more, but to build better and in a sustainable manner.

Sustainable construction is a key pillar in responding to this need. According to a 2023 Ipsos survey, 84% of sustainability leaders state that their companies already have a formal strategy in this area. However, 12% are still in the early stages. This reflects significant progress, but also the urgency to accelerate efforts. The transition toward more responsible practices is not only vital to reduce emissions and protect the planet, but also to respond to the demands of increasingly conscious consumers. According to Kantar IBOPE Media, 65% of Peruvians would be willing to pay more for eco-friendly products, and 73% would change their lifestyle to benefit the environment.

In this context, the construction industry has the responsibility to lead the transformation toward a more sustainable model by adopting clean technologies, optimizing processes, and promoting the use of eco-efficient materials. One example in this direction is the development of cements with a lower environmental impact than traditional Type I cement, such as Cementos Pacasmayo’s Ultra Armado HE, which allows for an approximate 5% reduction in CO₂ emissions thanks to its lower clinker-to-cement factor, aligning with the Cement Industry Roadmap 2030.

It is also essential to educate consumers and public sector authorities about the importance of choosing responsible materials. Sustainability education must be comprehensive, spanning from schools to policy-making spaces. It is crucial to raise awareness of how each material choice can significantly impact the environment. The benefits are not only environmental but also extend to economic and social dimensions, contributing to the development of more resilient, safer cities better prepared for the challenges of climate change. Transformation requires collective commitment and a shared vision of responsibility.

The decarbonization of construction is not merely a technical goal, but a paradigm shift that demands joint commitment. Companies must be proactive in integrating innovative and sustainable solutions, while the government should promote public policies that encourage these practices. For example, Peru already has a Sustainable Construction Code that addresses building methods and the environmental impact of materials. The dissemination and understanding of this code are vital for the industry’s emission reduction plans.

Sustainable construction is not only possible, but essential. The decisions we make today will define the quality of life of future generations. We must commit to an industry that not only erects structures but also builds a more responsible and conscious future for all.
