Innovación, sostenibilidad y cultura digital: pilares fundamentales para transformar la construcción en el Perú

  • During its participation in Building Latam Fest, Cementos Pacasmayo executives highlighted how innovation across multiple fronts is driving the sustainable transformation of the construction sector.

The construction sector faces major challenges such as the infrastructure gap, the need to develop sustainable solutions, and the shortage of skilled labor. Addressing these issues requires an innovative approach. However, according to the World Bank, investment in research and development in Latin America accounts for only 0.62% of GDP, compared to the global average of 2.62%. This results in the slow and limited adoption of new technologies.

In order to address these challenges and promote innovation in the construction industry across the region, Building Latam Fest 2024 was held. The event, which took place on the campus of the University of Engineering and Technology (UTEC), brought together key leaders from the construction and housing sectors in a space dedicated to learning, debate, collaboration, and the development of disruptive ideas.

Building for the future

During this important event, Cementos Pacasmayo highlighted its contributions in multiple panels focused on transforming the sector. Through its participation in the Future Construction, Corporate Innovation, and Sustainability tracks, the company demonstrated its commitment to innovation, sustainability, and cultural evolution as key pillars for the development of the industry in Latin America.

In the panel “Beyond Efficiency: The Eco-Efficient Route,” Inés Roggero, Central Manager of Innovation, Digital Transformation, Data & Analytics, and IT at Cementos Pacasmayo, emphasized that the synergy between innovation and sustainability is essential to address the sector’s current challenges in a more efficient and responsible manner. “The integration of both disciplines ensures that we not only deliver high-quality products, but do so with a firm commitment to the environment and society, optimizing resources and reducing our impact,” she stated during her intervention.

Innovation and collaboration are essential to advance more sustainable practices in the construction sector. “Teamwork not only accelerates the sector’s transformation, but also enables the development of customer-centric technologies, representing a strategic opportunity to close gaps and generate a positive impact in our communities,” Roggero added.

For more than 26 years, Cementos Pacasmayo has been consolidating an eco-efficient portfolio composed of blended cements with a lower clinker-to-cement ratio compared to traditional cement. This has helped prevent approximately more than 8 million tons of CO₂ equivalent emissions, replacing Type I cement. In addition, the company has developed EcoSaco, a packaging solution for concrete mixes that disintegrates inside drum-style mixers without needing to be opened. With its proper use, up to 4.5 million bags could potentially avoid becoming waste.

Innovating beyond cement

This comprehensive approach is also reflected in the company’s future business vision. During the panel “Beyond Cement in Cities,” Ibrahim Chahuán, Central Manager of Construction Solutions at Cementos Pacasmayo, stated: “For Pacasmayo, going beyond cement means not only developing new solutions that adapt to our customers’ needs in a changing market. It also means adapting to their demands and transcending the role of a construction materials supplier to become a strategic partner in their daily operations.” Chahuán highlighted Pacasmayo’s wide range of innovative solutions, including ready-mix concrete, bagged solutions such as Rapimix, light and heavy prefabricated elements, and pavement solutions.

Innovation not only encompasses product and service development but is also deeply embedded in the company’s organizational culture. Fernando González-Olaechea, Design Research & Culture Hacking Lead at Cementos Pacasmayo, who participated in the panel “Beyond Digital: Cultivating a Culture of Innovation and Change,” explained: “Culture is what we do when no one is watching. Our approach has been to prioritize practices over statements and encourage different teams to take action. Empathy, experimentation, resilience, feedback, and creativity are the components of the design mindset we have defined, aligned with our cultural principles.”

Building Latam Fest 2024 made it clear that innovation, sustainability, and collaboration are the pillars for transforming the construction sector in Latin America. Cementos Pacasmayo, as a key player in this transformation, reaffirms its commitment to leading with innovative solutions that address industry challenges while keeping customers and sustainability at the core of its strategy.
