Cinco formas de optimizar el uso del agua en obras y proyectos de construcción

  • Responsible water use is key to reducing environmental impact and improving project efficiency.

In the context of World Water Day, it is essential to reflect on the importance of efficient water management across different sectors. In the construction industry, the efficient use of water not only helps minimize environmental impact on construction sites, but is also crucial for sustainable urban growth. According to the National Center for Strategic Planning (Ceplan), by 2030, 58% of the Peruvian population will live in areas facing water scarcity as a result of the global water crisis expected in the future. Therefore, given the need to preserve water resources, it is essential to adopt innovative and sustainable practices in the sector that help optimize water consumption at every stage of the construction process.

“Inefficient water use in construction impacts the water footprint, affects water availability, and increases operating costs,” stated Marco Morales, Manager of Safety, Occupational Health, Environment, Management Systems, Compliance, and Permits at Cementos Pacasmayo.

In this regard, the executive proposes several strategies to optimize water use in the construction industry:

Reuse of treated water: Some companies have begun implementing wastewater treatment systems for reuse in different activities. For example, the Cementos Pacasmayo plant in Piura has implemented a water reuse process in its Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP), ensuring that 100% of wastewater is treated and reused at this facility. This process allows treated water to be used for irrigating green areas and access routes, thereby reducing potable water consumption.

Rainwater harvesting and storage: Implementing rainwater collection systems allows its use in activities such as soil compaction, irrigation of green areas, or machinery cleaning, reducing potable water consumption on-site.

Use of efficient technologies: The use of efficient mixers and controlled dosing systems helps prevent water waste during the preparation of construction materials.

Awareness and training: Promoting good practices among work teams is essential to optimize water consumption. Raising awareness about the importance of efficient water use in construction can contribute to positive changes in the industry.

Measurement to drive action: Measuring water consumption in construction is key to identifying optimization opportunities, reducing waste, and ensuring sustainable resource management. Data enables the implementation of more efficient strategies, reduction of operating costs, and minimization of environmental impact for each project.

The construction sector plays a key role in the conservation of water resources. Implementing sustainable strategies not only helps reduce costs but also contributes to environmental protection, ensuring a more sustainable future for upcoming generations.
